SEATTLE CHARITY EVENT CALLS ATTENTION TO CHILDHOOD POVERTY OVERSEAS
ChildUnited.org Opens to Fund Education Programs for the Poorest Filipino Children
WHAT: In an effort to help impoverished Filipino children, a local Seattle native officially opened up an on-line Asian jewelry business, Child United at ChildUnited.org.
Child United specializes in selling handmade, fine Asian jewelry from Thailand and the Philippines. Fifty percent of the profits from every piece sold will be placed into several special education funds and s cholarships created to help Filipino children at the elementary to high school level.

WHY: Filipinos have a top Ethnic representation in the Seattle area.
Child United began after Christine Umayam, a Seattle-area native, traveled to the Philippines last year. Umayam recently quit her job to do something about the poverty she witnessed.
According to the World Bank, more than half of the Filipino population lives in poverty and most are children.
Fifteen million Filipinos try to survive on less than $1 a day, accounting for 1.5 percent of the people in the world currently trapped in extreme poverty.
